Figuring It All Out
Let’s kick things off with this text message, from a Mom who has finally “entered the digital age.” We know what that’s like – plenty of people end up persuading their parents to get a smartphone and start enjoying its many benefits.
This person is trying to text their Mom’s new phone, and starts to get a little concerned when there’s no response. No fear, because Mom is still figuring it all out. Her first question is an important one – how do you do a space?
We’re All JK Here
Next up we have a classic Dad joke but sent over text message. To be fair to this father, Dad jokes are usually pretty corny, but at least this one uses a fairly modern book and movie. This Dad asks his kid what Harry Potter’s favorite way of getting down a hill is.
Personally, we would have asked Harry Potter’s favorite way of getting around. When the person responds – like they do here – you just have to say “J.K. Rowling,” referencing both the author and the abbreviation.
Listen Very Carefully
When it comes to parents, some Moms and Dads really want their children to succeed. Well, most parents want their kids to succeed, but some want it above everything else. This mom really wants their kid to get to the head of the line, even if that means cutting in front of other people’s kids. Classic, right?
When this child complains they have to wait in a long line, their mom simply tells them to go to the head of it. Simple.
Fried Fish Fillets for Everyone
We love this text message exchange between someone and their Dad. As you can see, this person’s father decided to cook up some lightly fried fish fillets at one in the morning, and just keeps going on about it. Rather than asking their kid if they want “some food,” this proud cook just keeps mentioning his lightly fried fish fillets.
This is such a classic parent exchange, where the Dad is responding seriously and in full English, whereas the child is just trying to get information.
Don’t You Dare Continue
Alright, when we’re talking about Dad jokes, this is exactly what we mean. In fact, this Dad joke must be so obvious or common that their son tells them in advance not to bother. We’re sorry Dylan, but “Don’t say it,” just isn’t going to work this time.
This Dad makes an adorable joke about not being able to make reservations at the library. The punchline? Well, they’re booked. Fittingly, their son replied with an image of Samuel L. Jackson looking pretty mad.
Canny Text Nose
Up next is a Mom who tried her best to text despite having no glasses. When their child asked them to send over Uncle Bill’s address, she found herself at a bit of a loss. Understandably, their text message read like a string of gibberish, prompting their kid to wonder if everything was OK.
We like to imagine this Mom trying to type while squinting and contorting her face into a perplexed grimace. Someone should tell her you can make the font larger on smartphones.
Pranks by Parents
To be quite honest, if one of our parents pulled this prank on us, we would be furious. What we have here is a child – probably a teenager – who hears something in their home. They text their mom terrified, and she tells them to hide in a closet. Hey, if our mum told us that, we’d listen to them!
This poor person ends up trembling in a closet and then gets locked in by the imaginary thief, aka their pranking parent. Terrible!
Dad Jokes Galore
You know, we guess it’s OK for parents to mess with their kids a little. After all, they did bring them into the world, and probably made a bunch of sacrifices to feed and educate them. If that means they get to make a few jokes here and there, we guess we’ll allow it.
We’re assuming this text message exchange happened around Thanksgiving, or another time a turkey was being cooked. Unable to resist a corny joke, this Dad managed to slip one in.
The Twilight Treaty
Here we have an adorable text exchange where a Mom ends up delighting her daughter by making a Twilight reference. In the romance fantasy series, the Quileute tribe and the Cullen family make a treaty of peace in 1936. By doing so, the vampires and shape-shifting werewolves promise to stay off each other’s land, and to not kill or transform humans.
When this person left their phone charger somewhere and couldn’t get in touch with their Mom, they almost triggered the parent-child treaty being broken.
Dad Please, It’s Raining
From a kid’s perspective, what are parents for except giving lifts? Sure, they also provide basically everything you need to stay alive and navigate the world, but don’t they like owe you a ride too? If we have a kid, we’d definitely want to drive them around rather than leave them in the rain. Probably.
Hilariously, this dad keeps repeating “omg” when his child asks him for a ride home. Eventually, when threatened with his wife, he changes his tune.
Kid, You’re Awesome
It’s always great to see a parent and child that respect each other. That respect might come from how they treat people, the type of work they do, or just general admiration. In this case, parental respect is granted when a kid sort of calls his teacher an idiot.
Even though this teen got suspended from school, their father was so impressed that he didn’t even punish them. We love that this kid told their Dad the truth, and was ultimately rewarded for it.
What Are My Options?
It’s fair to say that you’d be a little bit concerned if your Mom texted you asking if she can send a message to 911. Understandably, most people’s first reaction would be panic. Why is my Mom asking about 911? What does my Mom need?
This person responds exactly like this, imagining that their Mom has had some sort of accident. In fact, their Mom is just checking out her options now that she has a smartphone. We can’t blame her.
Learning the Language
Did you know that we have Canadian rapper Drake to blame for the acronym YOLO? The slang term – meaning You Only Live Once – is similar to the Latin “Carpe Diem,” or “Seize the Day.” Drake’s 2011 mixtape with fellow rapper Rick Ross was named YOLO, and the word was used throughout the tape, especially on “The Motto.”
Drake eventually apologized for letting this word loose, saying he had no idea it would get so huge. Clearly, the word has even reached this Mom.
Making a Good Guess
Here’s a classic parental texting snafu. Many times, texting parents try to use an abbreviation or slang term, and end up getting it totally wrong. Trust us, there are plenty of examples on this list.
In this case, someone’s Mom asks them when they’re coming home, adding “WTF.” To their kid, this seems pretty harsh, as this internet slang includes some curse words. However, to the Mom in question, WTF simply stands for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Hey, that’s a pretty good guess.
Lost in Translation
And here we have yet another Mom trying their best to get their head around internet slang. They text one of their kids asking them to explain what IDK, LY and TTYL mean. When their kid responds with the answers, they misunderstand, thinking they’re being shooed away.
Whilst this Mom did end up feeling snubbed, we’re glad they asked about these slang terms in particular. If they’d asked about WTF or LMAO instead, they would have received an even ruder response.
Rolling on the Floor Laughing
From one extreme to the other, in this text message exchange we have a father that’s really making an effort on his texting slang. Firstly, he uses “Rofl,” meaning “rolling on the floor laughing.” Then, when his child responds with a string of letters, he manages to nail that too.
Absurdly, “LSHIDMTAMSFO” is actual internet slang that stands for, “Laughing so hard I dropped my taco and my sombrero fell off.” There are other versions too, such as LSHISTC – “laughing so hard I scared the cat.”
The Important Life Lessons
While parents do teach us important life lessons about love, money, career and happiness (if we’re lucky), they also teach us practical things. They show us how to use a can opener, the best way to check the air in our tires, and the secret family trick for perfect rice.
In this case, this texter’s Mom taught them to add a spoonful of oil to boiling pasta so that it doesn’t stick together. Indeed, this is priceless info.
I Have Calls to Make
Out of all the endearing parental text messages on this list, we do particularly enjoy this one. This Mom informs her son that his great aunt has passed away, and finishes her message with “LOL” written in capital letters. To most users of cellphones, LOL means “laughing out loud.”
Unfortunately, this grieving mom thought it meant “Lots of love,” and sent it to everyone she informed about the death. As she indicates, she has an awful lot of calls to make.
You Only Live Once
And here we are, back at “YOLO” already. This Mom knows what the individual words in “YOLO” mean, but she’s not exactly correct in terms of its overall meaning. Plus, the context is slightly off.
When warning her child that the roads are icy, this mom adds a “YOLO” as a warning. As their child points out, “YOLO” is usually meant as encouragement, as a way of saying “Seize the day.” It’s not supposed to warn people that they only have one life.
I Hereby Rename You
Hilariously, in this message, someone’s Mom informs the family group chat that she’s going to change her daughters’ names. Keep in mind that the daughters in question are in the same group chat, and therefore old enough to read, write and own smart phones.
This Mom claims she wants to name her daughters after her favorite two species of tree, even though one daughter wants to call her child “Willow” too. We think she might have missed the best time slot for that.
I Just Think He’s Cool
OK, we’ve just said that our favorite parental text exchange is the one where someone’s Mom says “LOL” to all of her grieving family members, but, we might change our mind. As you can see, in this text exchange, someone’s Dad keeps using a horse emoji before, or after, his text messages.
Understandably, his kid wants to know, “What is it with that horse?” We don’t know what response he or we expected, but it wasn’t, “I don’t know I think he’s cool.” Fair enough.
I See You in My Dreams
Next up on our list of texts from infinitely loving parents, we have a psychic Mom sending her kid a warning. According to this quasi-clairvoyant mother, they’ve had two upsetting dreams about their daughter in recent nights. Even worse, the dreams show the daughter losing a hand.
Naturally, this Mom feels the need to warn her daughter about any potential hand loss situations. Reasonably, their daughter responds with a mocking photograph, showing one hand tucked away. All we can think about is Buster Bluth.
Speak to Your Grandma
Here we have a pretty classic exchange between child and parent. To begin with, someone asks their Mom what it’s like to have such a beautiful and clever daughter. Let’s be honest, who amongst us hasn’t asked the very same question?
In response, this person’s Mom tells them to ask their grandmother instead. Of course, she’s saying that she is the beautiful and clever daughter. You can’t beat a bit of intergenerational humor, especially when it’s just poking fun.
Let’s Be Really Honest
Likewise, this message between a mother and son also pokes fun. The son excitedly texts his Mom to tell her he has news. When she asks what it is, he reveals he’s purchased a fish tank and some fishy residents to live inside it.
We’re not sure exactly what response this person wanted from their Mom, but they got some classic Mom snark instead. This mother doesn’t want to deal with clownfish, filters and fish food – she wants grandbabies!
What Did I Just Say?
You know, you probably can’t win with this Mom, but that’s what makes her text message to her kid so amusing. This Mom was getting ready for a serious workout, and didn’t want to be distracted by her cellphone. Rather than turning her phone off, putting it on silent, or sending messages to voicemail, she decided to text everyone and tell them not to text her.
The problem with this strategy is that it prompts lots of text messages. Case in point, her child’s response.
Well That Was Brutal
With our next text message, we have something short and simple. A person tells their Mom they aren’t funny, and then gets roasted in response. Come on, what did this person expect? They tell their mother they never make any jokes, and then expect them not to say, “I made you?” Seriously, they asked for it.
With this text message exchange, this cocky person can’t tell their Mom they aren’t funny ever again. From where we’re standing, she’s absolutely hilarious.
Hello, Hotel Manager Here
When it comes to parenting, there are a few lines that appear again and again. Your Mom might ask, “Do you think I’m your maid?” or someone might remind you that they’re not a taxi service. Another popular one can be found here, where someone’s Dad refers to himself as the hotel manager.
We get it – parents spend time and money feeding, driving and cleaning up after us. However, we all know we’d get much better service in an actual hotel.
Check Out This View
Way back before smartphones, and before digital cameras, there were disposable cameras. These clunky little bricks took pictures, and you couldn’t see what those pictures looked like until you’d paid to have them developed. Annoyingly, lots of the developed photographs looked like this.
This was reasonable with a disposable camera, because you only had the viewfinder to see the “picture” while you took it. Surely on a smartphone this Mom can see that she’s taken a picture of her own fingertip!
Well That’s Fantastic
Next up we have another Mom that’s decided to come up with her own texting language. Much like the Mom who thought “LOL” meant “lots of love” or the Mom who thought “WTF” meant “Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,” this mother is just making things up.
In this case, someone’s wholesome mother has decided that WTF actually stands for “Well that’s fantastic.” While that’s just charming, and we wish it was the case, it’s very much not.
Making the Words Kinder
And we have yet another Mom that’s decided to create her own language. In this case, there’s no weird slang or misunderstood abbreviations, there are just brackets after each message. Oddly, there are no brackets at the beginning of the message, leading this person’s child to ask why they’re doing it.
The answer? They want the words to feel comfortable, hugged, and inspired to be kind. Hey, if this Mom wants to hug her words with brackets, who are we stop her?
Do You Run the Google?
We know we keep saying that a certain text exchange is our favorite, but then we read another, and it becomes our favorite instead. Hilariously, this Mom thinks their kid is in charge of the Google logo, and is changing it daily to irritate them. As their kid points out, if they had this power, they wouldn’t be driving an old car.
In fact, these changing Google logos are known as Google Doodles, and are used for holidays, major events, or to celebrate famous people’s birthdays.
Old Jokes Are the Best
Is it possible for someone to call their kid “Luke” and then not make Star Wars jokes at them forever? We’re not sure we could resist, and this Dad certainly couldn’t. This prankster Pop decided to change his name in his son’s phone to “Darth Vader,” just so he could text him saying, “Luke, I am your father.”
While young Luke might find this super embarrassing, at least his Dad went to so much effort to play a lame joke on him. It’s sort of cute.
Down With the Kids
For this text message exchange, someone’s police officer father takes an unexpected stance. These messages start off innocently enough, but descend into violence when the kid says he wants to stab everyone at his practice.
Rather than tell him to calm down, or ask for more details, this cop Dad just tells his son to not get any blood on his clothes. When called out, he takes the classic teenager line – “Don’t tell me how to live my life.” Kudos Dad.
Very Clever, or Very Cruel
We have to give it to this Mom – she knows exactly what to say to get her kid to actually pay attention. As is pretty common, this mother is texting her kid to remind them of their chores, to check they’ve done their homework, and to fill them in on holiday plans.
Annoyingly for them, their child just doesn’t respond. So, this Mom gets creative, and tells her teen that she plans to buy them a car. Right away, she gets a response.
You’re Very Hip, Mom
Parents can get pretty excited when their kids are home to visit. Usually, they jump right back into parenting mode, and start treating you like you’re 13 years old again. This Mom is so enthusiastic to see her child that she’s whipping up their favorite meal. Super excited, she texts them to tell them.
The thing is, both the parent and child are in the same house, and the kid knows about the meal already. This adorable Mom just wanted to text.
My Tummy Typed It
From one cute Mom to another, this person’s mother purposely sent their kid a message written by their stomach. That’s right. This playful Mom tucked their cellphone into their waistband, saw that it had “written” a message, and sent it onto their kid.
It turns out this Mom’s goofy sense of humor was passed on to her child, because she gets a bunch of laughing emojis in response. To be honest, if a tummy was to type something, it definitely would be “Mmmmm.”
I Little Sideways Heart You
Where would we be without parents misunderstanding text speak? We have to hand it to them – they’ve had to recently learn and adapt to massive amounts of new technology. They’re expected to use iPads, navigate Netflix, and keep up with the family on group chat. When do we expect them to learn the old-fashioned emoji for a heart?
Delightfully, this texting Mom interpreted the “little sideways heart” as an ice-cream cone. And you know what? We don’t really blame her.
Get Out of the Group Chat
As we’ve just pointed out, many people’s parents have had to adapt to lots of new technology in their adult lives. They spent their youths climbing trees, listening to records, and using the landline (if they were lucky). Now, we want those same folks to understand the ins and outs of group chats?
This person’s Dad hasn’t quite caught up on the latest chat technology. He tries to ask about his wife’s Christmas present, but asks it in a group chat with her in it. Oops.
It Wasn’t About You
Out of all of these parental text messages, you’d probably be most annoyed to receive this one. In this exchange, someone has messaged their Dad asking whether they wanted a boy or a girl. Presumably, this person wants their Dad to say, “A boy of course,” or “A girl, but we were thrilled to welcome you.”
Instead, this father says he was just interested in his wife at the time. That’s something no kid wants to hear, and they definitely don’t want it written down.
Hashtag Is This Correct?
After figuring out how to sign in and post on Facebook, many parents turn their attentions to Twitter. After all, it’s a great place to catch up on news, memes and weird internet arguments. But, upon entering the world of Twitter, many parents discover that they don’t really understand hashtags.
In reality, hashtags aren’t a huge part of using Twitter, but lots of parents seem to want in on them. This mom tries her best, saying “Hashtag conversation with son.”
The King of Selfies
While “selfie” was the word of the year in 2013 according to Oxford Dictionaries, we are proposing a new one for 2021 – introducing “pelfie.” Before you give us a standing ovation for our award-winning idea, we have to give full credits to our founding partner.
Meet the man in the picture here. To some he may be just a dad, but to us, he’s a visionary with a great love for words and Maltese poodles. Long live the “pelfie” king!
Untraditional Advice
You know the old parental saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away?” Well, this mother attempted to preach it to her child on text but with her own untraditional spin.
While her new and improved version should require parental supervision before using it, we can’t help but laugh. Nothing like a foul-mouthed parent to make your day. Plus, with the added vulgarity, there’s no way we could ever forget this piece of advice now.
Delivered and Received
While we all rely heavily on our phones on a daily basis, there are those unfortunate times when our trusty devices bug out on us. For this mom here, this was actually not the case even though she thought as much.
So, just to clarify to all those tech (un)savvy people out there, if your message gets delivered and the recipient replies, then your phone is working perfectly and your messages are indeed going through. Case closed!
Clear Your Camera Roll
As a general rule of thumb to be on the safe side, if you are giving your phone away, make sure to clear it first. If you don’t have time to delete everything, focus on your camera roll and notes. Those are often the places where stuff is located that are not for public viewing.
As seen here, this dad did not follow our advice and ended up exposing intimate photos of his wife to his son. There’s simply no coming back from that. Learn from his mistake guys!
In a Meeting, Not
This confusing chat between a father and his child occurred because of two potential scenarios. Scenario one – the dad pocket dialed an automated text by accident, or scenario two – he was simply trying to annoy his son for no apparent reason.
While option one appears to be the most realistic case, we vote for the latter because we love seeing parents act like kids. There’s nothing funnier to us than that, sorry not sorry!
Happens to Us All
Have you ever gone to the shops and by accident picked up the wrong groceries? Guilty as charged because it really does happen to us all. Often we’re trying to do too many things at once and as a result, our focus is compromised.
However, this father here made this error but with his own child. This mishap puts him in very hot water and high up on the questionable parenting list. We had to play bad cop here because mixing up your own offspring is a pretty serious offense.
You’re So Punny
There’s nothing like a good pun to make you laugh and see the day from a more positive perspective. And when that joke happens to come from a parent, it instantly becomes funnier and more appreciated. This “big leek” joke here fits our punny mold.
Plus, we have to give him credit for taking the time to place that single leek in the bathroom. That kind of commitment to a joke shouldn’t be taken lightly. We appreciate you, sir.
According to This Study
We all love to find articles that support our opinions. Why? Because it makes us feel more confident in our beliefs while stroking our egos, what’s not to love about that? Plus, we can use the sources as tools to back up our points in conversations.
That is sort of what this father did here if you add sarcasm, wit, and testicles to the equation. While this dad has some seriously big cajones (pun intended), we have to take our hats off to him for this joke.
Heat in the Kitchen
They say “if you can’t handle the heat, then get out of the kitchen,” but what about if you can’t handle the food? Well, according to this dad chef, you should take the odds and eat it anyway.
However, his child was a little too smart for that lurk and threatened that he would be the leading suspect if anything horrid happened. Turns out this dad is a savage both in and out of the kitchen because he was still willing to take the risk.
A Strong Emoji Game
In this digital era of texting slang and finding shortcuts, we all love to use emojis. They’re really expressive and help us convey our emotions in a shortened way.
This dad is on the same page as us and chose to express his love to his child in a way that she would appreciate – through emojis and texting slang. Now, that’s a cool dad who keeps up with the times. We only wish there were more of him!
One Point, Parents
In just one simple text message, this Mom manages to assert her power, and come off as pretty reasonable. Rather than arguing with her kid to tidy their bedroom, they incentivize them by hiding some money. Even better, this money is necessary for the kid to eat, effectively forcing them to clean their room.
Hopefully this kid did manage to tidy up a little. We wouldn’t be surprised if they read this message, ran upstairs, and turned everything upside down in search of the cash.
This Isn’t Twitter?
With this message we have another tech-phobic parent that hasn’t quite gotten their head around social media. Texting their son, this Mom asks, “Who’s reading this?” Understandably, their son responds with confusion, saying that he is reading it.
Hilariously, the Mom follows up by confirming with her son that she isn’t on Twitter. Hey, while this might seem ridiculous to us, at least she asked. That’s the best way to learn, right? This also begs the question, what does this Mom think Twitter is for?
Fancy Another Joke?
While many people sigh and roll their eyes at bad jokes, we think they’re an essential part of life that must be maintained. If we can’t tell jokes in person, or through chain emails, then we’ll text them instead.
This texted joke is pretty good quality. It’s no “knock knock” joke, and it’s not one that we’ve heard a million times. Rather, it’s a goofy bit of wordplay that relies on the other person asking “What about the glue?” at some point.
Wandering Around Walmart
Bizarrely, it’s pretty common for parents to forget their kids and leave them somewhere. Obviously, this isn’t the world’s best parenting but it does happen. Hey, these Moms and Dads have full schedules! It’s not easy being a parent.
As you can see from this text message, this Mom left her kid at Walmart, and didn’t even remember when she was halfway home. We have to assume this Mom went on autopilot, got her groceries, and headed home.
You’re Such a Biotech
Finally, we round out our list of parental text messages with this hilarious exchange between a Mom and their kid. This person’s Mom was trying to call them a cheeky term, but autocorrect kept preventing them from doing so. The result? Calling their offspring a “total biotech.”
Obviously, we don’t necessarily condone cursing at your kids, but these two seem to have a pretty good rapport. From now on, we’ve decided to call our close friends our “biotechs.” It’s catchy.
